Texas was an independent republic before it joined the Union in 1845. Today, the Lone Star State is the second-most populous state in the US, and home to 29 million residents. Generally, residents’ phone numbers begin with one of 28 Texas area codes, depending on the city or town on the Texas phone numbers database.
Before 1947, if you needed to make a phone call in Texas, you would need the call recipients’ 2L-5N phone number. The first two letters helped a caller know the switchboard to dial (which would be a mobile carrier today), while the last five numbers, 5N, were the call recipient’s unique identifier.
So, phone companies switched to a 10-number system based on the North American Numbering Plan. Per this system, a typical Texas phone number comprises:
This 10-digit system helped phone companies meet the ever-rising demand for phone numbers.
Take your typical ten-digit Houston phone number, 713-TXX-XXXX, and think of it as a physical house address.
713 is the area code, which represents a geographic area within Texas. In a house address, this would be your county or city of residence – in this case, Houston.
The next three digits, TXX, make up the prefix code. In a house address, this would be your town or street name within Houston.
Meanwhile, the last four digits, XXXX, is the line number that is unique to every phone number owner. In a house address, this would be your house number, flat number, or room number.
In 1947, there were four Texas area codes. Soon enough, four area codes proved insufficient. Today, Texas uses twenty-eight (28) area codes.
Besides connecting you with the person you wish to call, area codes also let you identify an unknown caller’s general location. But you will need a reverse phone search to get more specific information about the caller’s address and public records from the Texas phone numbers database.
Several persons can have the same Texas area code if they live in the same area. Likewise, several persons can have the same prefix code if they are neighbors. However, line numbers are unique. No two persons can have the same line number. This is why you can look through the Texas phone numbers database to identify the individual or business that owns a number.
